Health & the Change of Seasons

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:51 am by Administrator

It’s the beginning of fall and my clients are asking the same thing.

Question: Why I am feeling “off” and have no energy?

Answer: Your body is adjusting to the new season and all the changes that come with it. Your diet is changing: In the summer you were eating salads, fruits and foods that help replace vitamins and minerals you loss sweating in the heat.  Now you are eating soups and heavier meals to help keep the body keep warm.

Shorter and colder days call for more sedentary activities.  During the summer season, you may have been outdoors & active until 9pm, now it’s dark by 5:30 and you are watching movies or reading by 7pm.

The availability of sunlight triggers an overall feel-good atmosphere for most people. This is because sunlight stimulates production of brain chemical serotonin.  Sertonin controls sleep patterns, body temperature and sex drive.   Lack of sufficent sunlight and thereby less serotonin is enough for people to fall into depression, especially Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Your body needs time to adjust to the change in levels of sertonin.

Question: What can you do?

Answer: Get some extra hours of sleep.  Give your body some time to adjust and come into its natural rhythm. Get some acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on the rhythms of nature and will guide your body into the new season keeping you strong to fight off whatever the cold weather brings.

Acupuncture as Preventive Medicine

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:44 am by Administrator

Acupuncture has a 2,000 year history of success and great potential for a healthier life working in conjunction with western medicine

Most people come to acupuncture as a last resort, after they have tried everything else.  Acupuncture is often helpful at this point, because we look at the illness differently.   Western medicine sees the symptoms and names the illness and treats the illness.  Acupuncture evaluates the individual’s constitution and environment,   looking for an imbalance in energy flow that is causing a lack of nourishment in the body which leads to illness.  If you are 20 or 50, male or female, if you have a high pressure job, or you are a student or a yoga instructor, you and your environment are very different, your acupuncture treatment take’s these facts into account, strengthening your body to meet the demands of your life not just get rid of a symptom!

Acupuncture’s real effectiveness and value is to treat you at that stage when you are not sick enough to go to the doctor but don’t feel right. Receiving acupuncture at the beginning of an illness enables us to strengthen your whole system preventing the illness escalating, so there will be no need for medication with possible side effects or a prolonged recovery. We cannot replace western medicine, there are times only prescriptions or medical procedures can be effective. But wouldn’t it be great if it happened less often!

Acupuncture and Compasion Fatigue

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:32 am by Administrator

What is compassion fatigue?

Compassion Fatigue or secondary post traumatic stress disorder This term has replaced the more familiar term “burn-out.” It refers to a physical, emotional and spiritual fatigue or exhaustion that takes over a person and causes a decline in his or her ability to experience joy or to feel and care for others. Compassion fatigue is a one-way street, in which individuals are giving out a great deal of energy and compassion to others over a period of time, yet aren’t able to get enough back to reassure themselves that the world is a hopeful place. It’s this constant outputting of compassion and caring over time that can lead to these feelings.
